an introduction to The War in Italy
Sicily
The Italian Campaign started with the invasion of the island Sicily. The Sicily Campaign attack began July 10, 1943. British, American and Canadian troops waded up to the shores of Sicily. The Americans attacked to the West, the British battled to the East, and the Canadians fought many towns and villages in between. It was a great Allied victory with the end result of secured air bases, freed Mediterranean sea lanes, and the contribution to the downfall of the Italian leader, Mussolini. |
Mainland Italy
On September 3, the invasion of mainland Italy began and the Italian
government agreed to surrender to the Allies. Later on Mussolini was
saved from a prison in the Abruzzo Mountains by German troops and
later was appointed the leader of a close by small Nazi state in
Northern Italy. The Allies continued to advance up through Italy and in
June 1944 Rome fell. Close to a year later Mussolini was captured by Italian
partisans and promptly executed. The German forces soon surrendered
on May 1st and 6 days later Germany finally gave up and surrendered.
