When the Canadians set about liberating the Netherlands they knew it wouldn't be easy, and it wasn't. The Canadians were second in attempting the liberation, the British and US armies had attempted it in 1944 and failed and the Canadian army knew that they must do better than that.
The Germans did not give up The Netherlands easily, on their retreat they broke the dams and left behind much destruction as well as a starving population. The Canadian army did its best to fix the damage done as well as feed all those who were hungry as soon as they could. The deep involvement of the Canadians set the building blocks for a close and unique relationship between Canada and the Netherlands. This relationship has grown and the Dutch peoples remember the Canadian effort and sacrifice to this day.
